Parents, who believe that sex education pollutes the minds of their children, have in large number taken their children out of schools promoting sex education. In this process of instilling in their minds their religious and family values, they forget that the media, their children are largely exposed to can also lead them astray. Sex education in schools does not in any way offers them an invitation to have open sex by making them aware of the risks; it just educates them about the matter in the best way.

Apart from educating the students about safe sex, sex education in schools is also helpful as it helps students to learn proper terminology for reproductive system, STDs and birth contraceptives rather than the street lingo that is commonly used by laymen. Sex education classes are gender based and that is why the young learners are not embarrassed and are only taught what is related to their gender. Early inclusion of classes also helps the teenagers to either become abstinent for some time or to become responsible if they are already active. Therefore, many sexual problems that occur in adulthood can be controlled if effective and apt sex education is given at the right time.

A proper sex education which is holistic, nonjudgmental and comprehensive never misleads or misguides the teenagers. Such a curriculum should be imposed in all schools around the nation; it is an answer to many social problems and conflicts. Would any parent leave their kindergarten kids to walk alone on the streets without letting them know how to walk safely? No parent would actually do that, in the same way, letting your teenager children socialize with their peers and fellows without any proper sexual education is nothing contrary to the analogy mentioned above. It is hazardous and risky for their lives. Thus, proper sex education in schools should be encouraged so that they learn all the significant facts through trained teachers, who help and supports them in these matters of highly crucial value. Sex education should be taken as a positive aspect which promises healthier and better life for the youngsters. It therefore should be taken as a subject taught in schools to enhance knowledge on the subject matter; something merely as human anatomy or biology class. Sex education should be given in all schools to educate the children for their betterment, avoiding it will only result in emotional, social and health problems.

Heidegger – Language is the House of Being

Language is the house of Being. In its home man dwells. Those who think and those who create with words are the guardians of this home.” – Martin Heidegger, German philosopher, Letter on Humanism, 1947.

The philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset once said that man had no nature, only history. While I respect this opinion, I think that man’s real human nature is language. Just as the lesser god Prometheus handed fire to man, a major God handed a major boon to mankind: language.

After years of pondering whatever Martin Heidegger meant by “Language is the House of Being,” it finally dawned on me (as I watched catatrophic news on TV) that Heidegger meant language is not only a construct, a shelter, an edifice, an abode, but the soul of humanity–container of infinity.

Through language we search heaven and earth; through language we accept or reject God; through language we accept or reject the absolutes that guide the human race.

And yes, it is only through language that we experience aesthetic bliss–and love. Although bliss and love are more akin to the emotional life, the viscera, the central nervous system, the body can only partially express bliss and love. Language is indispensable, or if not, then try to tell that to painters, poets, and writers.

Take Trollope (in History of Pendennis):”It is best to love wisely, no doubt; but to love foolishly is better than not to be able to love at all.” And Trollope went on to fill library shelves with language and love.

We think and we feel by using words. Though words are more adept and adequate to thinking than to feeling, we still recognize that even our deepest emotions must be converted into words to express what we feel. When we immerse ourselves in a good book we feel with and for the characters: with Don Quijote and Sancho we experience the real meaning of friendship; with Anna Karenina and Aschenbach we feel the exquisite pangs of deeply tormented souls; with Remedios The Beauty we ascend to heaven.

Can we build science without language? Isn’t language the vessel of patterns, axioms, equations, paradigms, and formulas? Is wisdom achievable without language?

Even the most recalcitrant nihilist or atheist needs language to refute the existence of God; the same God that gave him the gift of language.

When humans master a language, they are never homeless. Even when their houses burn–as we watched the flames destroy thousands of houses in San Diego, California–their spirit, their humanity survives in the House of Being–Infinity.

How Are You Handling The Five Biggest Challenges Facing Managers and Business Owners Today?

There are ten fundamental premises that will determine your overall management success. Before we get to the five biggest challenges facing managers I thought I would give you the ten since thet are closely related.

1. When you have an issue, problem, failure, dysfunction or whatever – any –

where in the organization – look up the ladder for the cause and down the ladder

for the solution.

2. Everything that happens in an organization is the direct or indirect result of

that organization’s culture, philosophy and core beliefs.

3.You get the behavior you reward.

4. Effective management is not about the latest fad or philosophy. It is about a

fundament trust and respect for people and treating them accordingly.

5. Growing a business is not hard and it should be fun for everyone.

6. Integrity and ethics must be the foundation for all of your decisions and

actions.

7. If you want effective and productive employees you must see employee

development as an investment and not a cost

8. What employees want to be motivated and performance driven

is appreciation, recognition, validation and to feel important and to feel like they

belong.

9. The job of management is not to motivate employees but to create a positive

motivational climate where employees take responsibility for their own motivation

and performance.

10. You are responsible to your employees and not for them.

Here are the five biggest challenges today. They are;

·Corporate culture. Corporate, organization and department culture all flows from the top down. The written and unwritten rules, policies and philosophy of a manager or the organization all eventually find their way into the attitudes and performance of almost everyone in the organization. One of the critical things to remember when dealing with people is: you get the behavior you reward. If the culture directly or indirectly rewards a certain type of attitude or behavior, you are, by your actions or inactions, probably reaffirming that these are acceptable. If you want to change behavior, you must first evaluate the culture that is in place that may be rewarding the type of behavior you are getting but don’t necessarily want.

·Communication style. Rumors, hearsay, memos, emails, meetings, individual counseling sessions and bulletin boards all have one thing in common – they communicate information – some more effectively and timely than others. If communication in an organization is all top-down, you can be assured that you are not in touch with the realities of your organization, the marketplace, your customers or suppliers.

·Organization direction. One of the biggest challenges managers face today is effectively communicating corporate direction with clarity and consistency to all employees who have a right and need to know. Most organizations do a poor job of this at best. One way to find out what your people believe is to conduct an anonymous survey of attitudes, perceptions and opinions.

·Decision making. Many managers make decisions that other employees will either have to implement or that will affect them. If these decisions are made without bottom-up feedback, you can guarantee that the outcome of the decisions will be less than desired or expected.

·Feedback mechanisms. Employees want to know how they are doing – whether poorly or well. Failure to give them the feedback they need is to keep them in the dark regarding the assessment of their performance and how and where they need to improve.

Are management roles changing?

There are a number of conditions that are impacting the roles of managers today. A few of them are;

– Greater cultural diversity.

– Several very distinctive employee age groups.

– Increased impact and use of technology.

– A growing international market place.

– Ethical standards that are unclear or inconsistent.

– Greater stress levels among all employees.

– Corporate direction and strategy is under fire by consumers.

– The desire of employees for greater independence and autonomy.

– Increased consumer choices for products and services.

– Fewer specifically skilled employees.

– Relentless and accelerating change.

There’s more, but I don’t want to be responsible for ruining your day.

With all these factors, again I ask you, are the roles of managers, supervisors, executives and business owners changing today? You betcha. Here are just a few that I have observed during the past few years coaching and consulting with many of my clients in a variety of industries worldwide.

1. Many managers are responsible for increasing numbers of remote employees.

2. Some managers are finding that they are spending more time ‘doing’ rather than ‘managing’.

3. Some managers are spending increased time coaching employees on personal issues.

4. All mangers are faced sooner or later with position openings that they can’t fill.

5. Mangers in general have less time for their own personal development.

6. Most managers are having to learn to deal with a variety of different employees culturally, gender wise and age wise.

7. Managers in general are spending more time communicating via email than in person or by telephone.

Again, there are many more I could have included, but the essence is, that if you are still using management techniques and behaviors that you used more than five years ago I guarantee you are going to be less effective as a leader, coach and manager in today’s changing world.

The fundamental roles, attitudes or responsibilities of managers have not changed and a few of them are;

1. The need to trust your employees and your employees to trust you.

2. The need to respect their uniqueness.

3. The need to communicate openly and honestly.

4. The need to give them recognition and appreciation that is deserved.

5. The need to have a clear future career path available to them.

6. The need to compensate them fairly.

If you will do just these six consistently you will go a long way in successfully addressing many of the above listed factors.

The Depreciated Legacy of Cervantes

In The Art of the Novel Milan Kundera makes observations that echo Charles Baudelaire’s enraged comments concerning the values of literature in nineteenth century Europe. An embittered Baudelaire writes: “France is passing through a period of vulgarity. Paris: A center radiating stupidity in every direction. Despite Moliere and Beranger, no one would ever have supposed that France would take to the road of progress at such a rate. Matters of art: terrae incognitae.” According to Kundera the specialization wrought by science has managed to reduce man into a mere automaton: a thoughtless pawn manipulated by the masters of industry who have forgotten the deeper meaning of life.

For the last three hundred years the novel has been the vehicle used to probe humanity’s experience in this complex modern world. The novel has filled the role formerly held by religion and classical literature: its aim is to “discover the various dimensions of existence” that are inaccessible to science (or any other literary form). Therefore as science displaced the philosophic and religious systems of the medieval world, and the important investigations of being (the ‘dimension of depth’) were being threatened by scientific rationalism, the novel emerged to check the abuses of the “one-sided nature of the European sciences.”

Kundera considers Cervantes to be the father of the novel. Cervantes’ character, Don Quixote, sets out on a knightly adventure in the hopes of delivering the world from evil and winning the love of his beautiful dream lady, Dulcinea. His courtly notions of battle and love, however, prove to be delusions. The reality of the world has changed (or was misrepresented by the writers that inspired Quixotes’ quest); subsequently his living experience bears little resemblance to the imaginative experience anticipated after a lifetime of reading medieval tales of romance. But despite Don Quixote’s misperceptions of the world and his ridiculous failures, he can also be seen as a hero. Quixote holds on to an imaginative vision of reality that is romantic, exciting, and invigorating even when dry empirical facts seem to refute this vision.

Cervantes does not dogmatically tell the reader whether Don Quixote is an idiot or a hero; he could be both; he could be neither; he could be something altogether different than anyone has assumed. For human beings, and human experiences, defy narrow classifications. The novel, Kundera tells us, allows the reader to consider how ideas conform, or conflict, with experience. But the novel does not judge this experience as science or religion judges – with a single, unflagging, limited interpretation. Instead the novel opens up the world of man and discovers new human truths, situations and possibilities.

Kundera believes that the novel is being rejected by modern culture. Science once again has the power to oust humans out of the “world of life.” Kundera laments, “man has now become a mere thing to the forces (of technology, of politics, of history).” Deprived of the desire and the ability to comprehend deep, complex truths of being, humans opt to accept the simple stereotypes perpetuated by the media. Subsequently pop-culture and scientific domination threatens the human realm of being with idiotic (and dogmatic) assessments of the complex human world. Thus the legacy of Cervantes is depreciated and “the world of life” is forgotten.
