Education Sets You Free

Tied to her dead end, going no where job, a struggling mother of three enrolls in an online university, determined to make a better life for herself and her children. Soon, her outlook is much brighter and there is a glimmer of light at the end of her until then dreary tunnel. There was not a visit from a fairy godmother, no lottery windfall, simply the knowledge that education could and would make things better in a matter of time.

Education is the key to freedom for a lot of people- in this tough economy every little edge can make all the difference in the job market. Consider this: a college education can net you a job that pays far more than the job a high school diploma will win you. If you were an employer looking at two fairly equal applicants for a single position, would you chose the college graduate over the non grad? Of course you would not, you would take that extra diploma and pray that the degree is in something useful.

As the world becomes more and more technology based and fast paced, the competition for jobs will grow even fiercer. Soon there will be only the most menial jobs for those who will not go on to college, training in computer programming will be almost mandatory.

But education can mean more than just a better job and a higher paycheck; it can mean higher self esteem and the satisfaction that you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to. It does not matter when you return to school, or what you study, your brain wants to learn new things all the time. Keeping your mind fit and active is every bit as important as keeping your body healthy. Take a painting class, a cooking class, learn a new language. If you are retired, take the wild, out there class you were afraid to take while you were busy working. If you are still employed, consider a weekend class at a community college in something unrelated to your job- make it something fun for you to unwind. You will learn new things, meet new people and discover how free education can make you feel.

In most cases, you can apply for grants to help pay for your educational goals, and some employers will even reimburse some or all of your tuition if it is at all related to the job. (Check with your Human Resources representative first).

Of course, as with any new plan or idea, there might be opposition, but do not allow anyone to dissuade you from your goals. If your plan is a degree in 17th Century English Literature, then you go right ahead and get that degree! People are always afraid of new things, but that should not stop you in any way. There should be no blocking you- not your age, finances or time. If you want something bad enough, you will find a way to make things happen. Education is the key to freedom, so set yourself free, no matter what it takes. Oh, and that struggling mother of three? That would be me.

How to Study Alone and Pass Exams

These are advices from a medical doctor that studied alone to pass exams and enter medical school. No matter what are the exams you need to pass, these actions can help you study better and achieve higher scores.

First of all, feel motivated for studying. If you can’t motivate yourself to study that is probably because your career choices and the reason why you need to pass the exam aren’t the best for you. When we really want to accomplish something from the depth of the heart we love all steps of the journey. So analyze your situation and either feel that great motivation for studying or reformulate your goals.

Select good reference for every discipline you need to study. Not all textbooks or all reference materials are good enough to help you pass the exams. You need to choose them wisely since they will be the basis of your entrepreneurship as a successful autodidact. Go to a library or bookstore and get one main textbook for each discipline, choose the ones that are most complete and have review questions after the theoretical explanation. Check the program of your exam and the table of contents of each book. Also ask the bookseller or the librarian which option is the most well respected by the market. Pick the best ones. You need complete textbooks because in a following step you will make your own notes based on them.

Find a calm, organized, clean and pleasant place to study. This seems to be accessory but is fundamental. Take this advice very very seriously. If at your home you can’t manage to secure an own and exclusively yours place like that, search for it somewhere else. And don’t make a mess of that piece of paradise, keep your materials organized.

Plan your time for the study of all disciplines. It is strongly recommended that you study the disciplines one by one, not mixing them all. For example, if you need to study math, study it entirely for three weeks or more if necessary and only after that go to other discipline. This method will ensure that you’re focusing the learning of the contents of the discipline and your time will be spent more efficiently. So plan your schedule using weeks (not days or, worse, hours) for each discipline. Of course, after completing the study of a whole discipline, you should periodically revise your notes of the discipline and solve related problems to refresh your knowledge.

Now that you’re ready, all you have to do is to read the textbooks making summaries of their content. Imagine you’re studying the entire biology. Start reading the first chapter of your biology textbook and make systematic and organized notes of all of the concepts you know are necessary for you to learn or remember for the exams. Your goal here is to produce you own handwritten material for complete reference in order to study later using that material made by you and not the textbook. Keep this in mind and you will produce great summary notes of all disciplines.

Finally, don’t forget to solve questions. Problem solving training is fundamental. Solve the questions of the textbook just after you studied the related chapter. But even more important is to solve problems of at least the five previous exams you are going to face. Make this after reviewing an entire discipline.

Studying alone to pass exams isn’t so difficult as it seems to be. May these study tips be helpful for you.

Ask the Engineer – “Gutter Covers Vs Cleaning the Gutters?”

You see ads for gutter protectors every where telling you that you’ll never have to clean gutters again, but before you buy, think twice. In fact don’t think; do research. The cost of gutter protection can range from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars.

Since most gutter covers are known for poor performance, it might make more sense to contract a gutter cleaning service several times a year for between $75 to $100 or so. And if indeed you can find a reputable insured company that will service you it’s probably the best way to go. Yet, that may be a difficult challenge; and having someone else or you cleaning your gutters may not be the way to go. Why? Answer: There are several reasons:

1. Not all gutter cleaners do a good job. Rosemary paid $75 to have her gutters cleaned and just three days later they overflowed. Did the contractor do a bad job or did enough leaves fall to clog the downspout? Answer: No way to tell.

2. The fellow Joe hired to clean his gutters didn’t have any insurance. Big problem! Unfortunately there was an accident with the ladder and the fellow sued Joe; and Joe went through a nightmare the fellow’s doctors and Joe’s own insurance company.

3. Claire had a company clean her gutters at an advertised price of $75 but ended up paying $350. The company replaced end caps, drop tubes, elbows and charged her an arm and a leg for every additional service.

4. Jim always cleaned his gutters until his ladder slipped and he ended up falling through his living room bay window and ended up in the hospital with a broken pelvis.

Yes, to avoid these issues, it looks like the smart thing to do is install a gutter protector with a promise to solve clogged gutter problems. But buyer be ware. If you choose the wrong product it can also be nightmarish with flooded basements, mildew, mold, soil erosion, and worse yet the be totally dependent on the installing company as you can no longer access your own gutters to clean them.

So let’s do some research. Basically there are six different types of gutter protection devices:

1. Screening devices which are not really recognized as gutter protection devices. Made of wire, metal, or plastic, they work simply with gravity and require routine ladder maintenance.

2. Filters, membranes, and brushes installed in or on existing gutters. Basically they are not any more effective than screens and require routine ladder maintenance.

3. Fin type with rounded front nose and solid flat top. Their advertising graphics lead you to believe that debris is jettisoned off onto the ground when instead in medium-to-high debris areas enough debris sticks to the surface to clog the gutters. Here you have to depend on the installing company for service. See resource box for photos.

4. Flat solid top with rounded front nose and a trough–fin type with trough. Since the basic fin type fails, the next progression was to add a trough. But it doesn’t take a college graduate to see that debris that goes into the trough (basic screening system) will either clog the trough or break down and pass into the gutter and clog it. See resource box for photos.

5. Flipping type gutter or rain dispersal units. These require removing your gutters and installing either a gutter with a hinge that gets flipped or fins (installed horizontal to the fascia board) to disperse the water. They both look viable until you see them work. The rain dispersal unit doesn’t work in slow rain fall and debris lays on top of it blocking it from working. The flip clean gutter requires a rain coat for when the gutter is full of putrid debris. The flip clean gutters are also known to warp rendering them useless.

6. Rounded front nose with vertical louvered water collectors and a flat solid top. Whereas with the fin type of gutter cover that will pass full sized leaves, the louvers discriminate the size of the debris the gutter cover allows into the gutter. This gutter guard is the only rounded nose type that limits the amount of debris or size of debris that can pass into the gutter.

This one system has proved that gutters can stay free flowing in heavy debris conditions for twenty years; and that’s no small feat. The only downside is that in heavy debris conditions debris can accumulate on the louvers and block them off meaning that some kind of maintenance is required.

Whereas most other products require someone to go up a ladder and clean the gutter or the cover, it can easily be done from the ground using a telescopic pole and brush. Because it’s easy to see where cleaning is required, there’s no guessing where to do the brushing. No rain coats are required (as might be with the flip type gutter) to do this simple task as it can actually be done dressed in a suit and tie.

After all, telling someone, who has to clean his gutters several times during the fall, that no maintenance will be required is like asking the him to believe in Santa Claus.

Benefits of Short Stories

A short story is a literary work that tells a series of event in a specific setting. These series of events are the product of the writer’s powerful mind and imagination. They are the result of contemplations, and realizations done by the writer either during his gloomy or happy days. Short stories are the outlet of the writer’s emotions. It is through short stories that a writer directly or indirectly expresses his ideals, beliefs and opinions regarding issues that continually confronting the society. Thus stories are written due to several purposes such as to inspire, to educate, to entertain and to provoke one’s emotions.

Whichever the purpose of a particular story, one thing that is very much sure is that stories have lots of benefits to everyone.

For children stories teach them moral lessons which will be planted in their young minds and that they can ponder upon as they grow older. Other than that, they help in the enhancement of children’s imaginative thinking which leads to creativity. According to some experts, children are being trained to think imaginatively while listening or reading stories in accordance to how the writer describes the setting, characters, and events that took place in the story. More than that, children are taught to focus their attention to a specific topic so that if they will be engaged to more complicated brainstorming or emersions they won’t have any difficulty. One thing more, their vocabularies will be developed. As a result,, this will help them develop their communication skills both in oral and written communication.

For older person, stories especially with those that contain humor entertain people. Short stories would also provoke questions in the minds of people regarding life and society. Short stories enables them see realities even though the events in the stories did not happen in actual scenes; but there are several situations in life that can be related to those events. The readers are made to see and think of the realities in life. Another thing is that stories teach people to appreciate the beauty of life. This is because through short stories that the adventures of people are told. These characters are used to symbolize things in the real society. It is through them that writers relate the message they wanted their readers to grasp. Despite the fact that these characters shown in these stories don’t exist in real life, their struggles can be compared to someone in real life.

Those benefits mentioned above are only among the many benefits of reading short stories. Seeing those benefits that stories can give, it is just correct to conclude that reading short stories is helpful to all.

Criminal Forensics – MO vs Signature – How to Tell the Difference Between a Crook’s Various Actions

When you watch your favorite CSI TV show , you may have heard of the terms, MO, or modus operandi, and signature that a perpetrator uses when committing a crime. What is an MO and how does it differ from a criminal's signature?

In this article, we will elaborate on the differences between these two terminologies so that when you watch your favorite detective show, you will have a better understanding of what the characters are talking about.

Modus operandi, aka MO, or method of operation, refers to the tools and techniques that a crook uses to commit a crime. This concept is very ancient. In fact, this concept dates back 19th century England when a police constable, Major LW Atcherley of the West Riding Yorkshire Constabulary of England, developed a 10-point system for identifying a perpetrator's MO. Scotland Yard later incorporated many of his techniques that are still in use today.

The following factors are considered when identifying a perpetrator's MO:

  • Place of the crime
  • Point of entry
  • Method of entry
  • Tools used during the criminal act
  • Kinds of objects removed from the scene of a crime
  • Time of day when the crime occurred
  • The culprit's alibi
  • The culprit's accomplices
  • Mode of transportation to and from the scene
  • Unusual characteristics of the crime, such as killing the house cat or leaving behind a note or object to challenge police

All these factors address the culprit's method of doing things. He finds it necessary to do these things as part of committing the crime.

An MO may evolve over time as the perpetrator finds better ways to commit murder or other kinds of crimes. This may include changing his mode of entry, ploy, disguise, or the time when the attacks occur. He will modify his methods to become more effective and help him avoid being detected.

On the flipside of an MO, a signature refers to an act that has nothing to do with completing the crime or getting away with it. Signatures are important to the perpetrator in a personal way. Torturing the victim, repeatedly stabbing the victim, postmortem mutilation, and the removing of souvenirs or trophies are examples of signatures. These actions are motivated by a killer's fantasies and psychological needs.

Unlike an MO, the perpetrator's signature does not change. His signature may be refined over time, but the basic signature stays the same. For instance, if a serial killer poses his victims in particular manner with a crucifix on the chest, details like candles, bracelets or other ceremonial objects may be included at a later time. The signature has changed, but its basic theme and form stay the same.

The driving force of a signature is the reason for its stability. The perpetrator's signature takes it origin directly from his fantasies. These fantasies develop at a young age and are refined into an obsession from years of mental rehearsal. During the crime, the perpetrator forces the victim to respond in accord with his fantasy. The signature is used only by the culprit to carry out his personal fantasy. Because his fantasy never changes, the signature stays the same.

The next time you watch CSI and hear of the terms MO and signature, you will have a better understanding of their definitions.

Should I Get an Accounting Degree? Pros and Cons

The Pros:

  • You are almost guaranteed to find a job somewhere as there is always a need for accountants. Especially with the clamping down on financial legislation, professional management reports and annual financial statements need to be submitted in order to stay in business, so in house accountants are always on board, if not the people with accounting degrees are outsourced.
  • Unless you work for yourself, you will more than likely be offered work within a large firm allowing you to interact with many like minded people on a day to day basis.
  • Your degree can be utilized within many fields of accounting, adding diversity and growth to your qualifications.
  • Through the use of your studies, you can become exposed to many different types of business when you do their books or their tax. Whatever work you do for clients will be an education in the operating of their business.
  • Impressive salaries and opportunity for growth with any of these degrees.

  The Cons

  • Although there is a lot of job availability within this field, so too are there a lot of accounting degree graduates. You will be up against some tough competition for entry level jobs.
  • Using your accounting degree to go and work within a big firm, you will usually be assigned to many different operations for many different businesses. This means you will be answering to a number of different “bosses” which can be stressful and require a lot of management on your part.
  • On the whole, the accounting world is relatively conservative. But perhaps that will suit you?
  • Your work is generally billed per hour which means you need to stay on top of every single hour that has been worked. All work needs to be documented, so an extensive record of hours worked and to be billed needs to be kept.
  • All graduates will soon find out that you will be required to work long hours. Sometimes all night or all weekend if it means that the job gets done on time. That impressive salary does have it’s hitches!

All in all, opting to study for an accounting degree is a positive choice that will offer you many rewards in the long run. But maybe after perusing these few pros and cons, you will feel differently about this.

IT Job Titles – What Do They Mean?

Although only a few decades old, the information technology or IT field is as broad and deep as industries that have been around for centuries. IT job categories, titles and specialties abound – so many that anyone investigating IT as a career is likely to be very, very confused. What’s the difference between a Network Engineer and a Network Support Analyst? Between a Web Developer, a Web Designer and a Web Technology Specialist? Just what does a Database Administrator do?

Although labels and responsibilities tend to vary from employer to employer, here are some common IT job titles and their descriptions. Consider these when looking for an IT career that best suits your interests, talents and temperament:

Database Administrator – A database is any collection of information that a company or organization keeps on file (e.g. customer names, addresses, inventory, etc.) The Database Administrator (DBA) is in charge of organizing, maintaining and updating this database and creating systems so that people authorized to view, add or remove information are able to do so as quickly and as easily as possible.

Internet Solutions Developer – This is a “catch-all” description for a person responsible for devising and executing Internet-based projects. The job usually involves working with programs that allow the public to view and interact with a company, organization or agency’s Website.

IT Project Program Manager – This is a managerial position requiring some years of experience in the IT field. The IT Project Program Manager is responsible for finding solutions to IT-related problems and then implementing those solutions, often with the help of a team.

Network Administrator – A “network” is any collection of computers that are linked either to each other or to a central server so that information can be created, shared and updated. The Network Administrator is generally responsible for making sure than an existing network runs smoothly and for adding or removing hardware (computers, printers, etc.) and software (programs, applications) from the system.

Network and Security Specialist – The Network and Internet Security Specialist is the person responsible for making sure people who use a computer network only get access to that information they are allowed to see, that information in the network database’s is protected and properly preserved, and that the network cannot be accessed (or “hacked”) by unauthorized individuals, wherever they may be.

Network Engineer – The network engineer is usually responsible for 1) Designing new computer networks, 2) Actually creating these networks, 3) Installing the computers and software that connect to the networks and, 4) Ensuring the network is able to grow and function as needed.

Network Support Analyst – A Network Support Analyst is much like a Network Administrator in that he/she is responsible for keeping an existing network operating as needed, but has fewer managerial responsibilities. The Network Support Analyst may also be responsible for monitoring how people actually use the network, identifying problem areas and then recommending and implementing solutions.

Software Developer/Engineer – “Software” is the set of instructions that make a computer do what you want it to do. The Software Developer/Engineer is the person who writes the instructions, also known as “code,” for these computer programs/applications. Software Developer/Engineers may work “in-house” developing customized programs for a specific employer or client, or may work on programs that are then sold commercially.

Technical Support Specialist – Computers and networks invariably have problems, and it’s the Technical Support Specialist’s job to identify these problems and find a way to correct them. Technical Support Specialists often work at “help desks” where they communicate with company employees or customers by phone, IM or email.

Web Developer – Web Developers create, maintain and update the functional aspects of Websites, be they on the Internet or on a company’s internal Intranet. When designing a new site, they’re usually responsible for creating its architecture, navigation and interactive functions. They may also be responsible for creating programs or applications designed specifically for the Web.

Web Designer – While the Web Developer is concerned with the technical aspects of a Website or Web-based application, the Web Designer is responsible for how such a site or application actually looks. This is an artistic position that requires training and experience in graphic design and layout – and perhaps even animation — as well as the technical aspects of Web operations.

Web Technology Specialist – This position combines the responsibilities of the Web Developer and Web Designer. The Web Technology Specialist needs to not only the technical aspects of Websites and applications, but also needs to frequently handle the design and graphic aspects as well.

If you are considering career training in Information Technology, you need to understand these (and other) job descriptions so you can pursue the education and training that will qualify you for the kind of IT job that fits your talent and personality.

In addition there is support for those who truly want to step up their singing.

Burnley has a proven track record of helping some of the biggest names in the industry reach stellar heights through applying his insights and methods. This is not a one size fits all approach, rather a collection of a broad range of techniques and tips that have one thing in common: They work for almost everyone. This program promises to increase your range and improve your overall singing. Roger is confident that you will see results and he is willing to stand by his words.

What the program will teach you

Throughout the DVD learning set, Roger will teach all the important aspects of developing a stronger, better sounding tone of voice. It will include his own singing tips and techniques, and vocal exercises that he’s taught to various singers in the past. He goes into detail explaining how to use your vocal apparatus properly. The videos show his very approach about how to visualize what you’re doing and which part of your body you should focus on. Being able to look at how people apply these methods first hand will help to demonstrate how you can easily and quickly pick up these new singing tips and techniques. The site contains further instructions on the vocal exercises, informative educational videos and a blog where members are able to post questions for Roger’s response. This is the first singing instructional program to offer this feature. Additionally, members have the ability to upload audio or video recordings of their singing for Roger’s comments and individual direction.

Final words

The major weakness in Roger’s program has is that it is a home based product. Not being able to talk one on one with a coach or other singers can seem unsettling for many students who are familiar with traditional methods. Getting immediate feed and motivation can be a big part of one’s success. But, with member’s site and the addition of a one on one call from Roger, it should help address that issue.

While promises of 100% success are unrealistic and exaggerated, this program will get you as close to that threshold as possible, for a fraction of the cost of real and in-person coaching. Whether you have the desire sign a record deal, perform on stage or just improve your skills for personal satisfaction, you can easily find great valuable lessons from this singing course that will get you closer to your goals. In a short amount of time you will undoubtedly see some results and notice that your voice has improve tremendously.

How Has Technology Improved Education?

Teaching and learning have taken on a whole new dimension due to the major impact of technology in schools. Teachers now have a medium to communicate effectively with one another and share ideas to better their teaching skills. They now have a pool of endless resources they can utilize to offer students the assistance they need to develop their ability and advance. The computer has improved education in many ways. There is now the reduced use of paper, which plays a role in environmental conservation. This positively supports what teachers are trying to instill in their pupils; it is important to preserve the natural environment and take care of our surroundings. There is no better way to do it than putting a stop to cutting down trees.

Other notable areas of improvements as a result of technology are;

– Information on different subject matter is readily accessible. This is not only beneficial to teachers, but students as well. There is no limit to the knowledge one can attain from the internet. What’s more, the material available is diverse since it’s presented by people from different parts of the world. This opens up a student’s viewpoint and allows for fresh, new ideas to arise.

– There is a lot of software that schools can use to create far more interesting presentations and programs. Students can use the software on projects thus they have a way to express their tasks effectively and in detail.

– Technology has helped do away with distance and time restrictions. Online education has opened numerous possibilities for students and teachers alike. You can now school or teach from anywhere in the world. Many online schools are accredited and registered with the necessary government bodies. This means that every individual interested in acquiring a higher education has the opportunity to do so now. Many people who have jobs also have the chance to pursue further studies without giving up their careers.

– The introduction of schools online has made education more enjoyable and achievable. Because this allows a visual and audio mode of communicating, everyone can share ideas, knowledge, as well as information and make others the better for it.

Through technology, education has been transformed. Learning and teaching has become more interactive. It has also done away with barriers as knowledge can now be shared across borders. Different cultures can now openly appreciate one another as they learn the various ways of life. Technology has undoubtedly improved the scope of education and through this there will be more technological advancements. Thus, technology and education are correlated; they work together to develop each other.
